Every Loss Is Gain: A Poem

A handwritten poem.

I wrote this poem almost backwards in the sense that it was the last line that jumped to my mind and asked for me to give it a home in my writing. It was a rainy morning and well suited to my mood: some things may be called setbacks, but really, every loss is gain if you understand it rightly.

Clouds must drop their water,
Else we’d have no rain.
Earth must give up nutrients
To give life to grain.

Grain must drop its seeds,
Else they bear no fruit.
Seeds are split and broken
To send forth a shoot.

Sun must set in darkness
For dawn to come again.
Christ must die a bloody death
To give hope to man.

For the ones who love God,
One rule is made plain:
Though with love comes sacrifice,
Every loss is gain.
