If you listened to my previous work Martyrion, this new piece continues the seasonal theme. Mysterion is a winter reflection: my hope is that this song reawakens in you the sense of wonder that snowfall invites us to enjoy! As this work grew and developed, it became not just an appreciation of the beauties of snow, but also a meditation on God’s Eucharistic love for us, which is small, hidden, and even frail, but nevertheless powerful and deserving of our utmost gratitude. You can find the lyrics to Mysterion below or listen to it via the embedded video. Enjoy!
Early one morn as I awakened,
My eyes were struck with strong, quiet light;
Strange, yet familiar, I gazed outside:
What a wondrous sight!
During the night, the stars had fallen;
There they lay, gleaming up from the earth,
Precious pearls bestowed abundantly by Him Who makes them shine:
Gifts for the lowly of birth.
What is this manna from the heavens?
What is this glittering kind of dew?
Food immaterial, drink divine,
Making all things new.
Come, contemplate, be fed on wonder!
Let beauty’s light your soul’s thirst destroy,
Feast on frozen flakes of firelight, be warmed with winter’s wine:
The Host of this banquet brings joy!
Why does angelic bread refresh us?
Why is the world transfigured with white?
Our hearts are heavy, we shiver in shame
In the Vale of Night.
What has come down, has come down freely;
There is One Who would give without cost,
Scattering His Love like ashes to sanctify our souls,
To seek and to save what was lost.
Knowing we hide from Him Who made us,
Brides terrified of their wedding day,
He will wait patiently, come in disguise,
And teach us how to play.
Every sight or sound of beauty,
Every thought that’s lovely and true
Is an invitation from above to live a life divine,
To love the One Who loves you.
